Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why should I hire an arborist to do my tree work when my landscaper says he can do it cheaper?

Yes sometimes this may happen.  However you should make sure that they have the proper insurances.  Landscape insurance does not cover workers working at heights over 8 feet in the air.  Just ask because we pay ten times as much for insurance and if an accident were to happen you don’t want to be held liable.

  • When is the best time to prune my trees?

It all depends on the species.  Ideally you should have an arborist give recommendations.  Some trees like the Elm should only be pruned in the winter to prevent disease.

  • I have a green substance growing on the bark of my tree’s what is this are my tree’s dying?

Lichens can be found growing on tree bark, but they do not cause any harm to the trees and are not considered parasitic organisms. It is interesting to note that lichens tend to grow quickly when exposed to full sunlight, which could be why they are often abundant on dead trees.

  • Do my trees need fertilizer or is my lawn fertilize enough?

It's true that most trees require additional fertilizer, but it's important to have a soil sample analyzed to determine the specific nutrients your tree needs. In the northeast, it's common for trees to not require phosphorus, which is a key ingredient in basic fertilizers. At Sepe Tree, we adhere to IPM standards and utilize tailored fertilizers to safeguard our local water and ecosystem.

  • My oak tree is growing really close to my house, Do I have to take it down?

We suggest seeking the services of a certified arborist to assess the tree. Crown raising can provide an average of 12-15ft of clearance between the roof and the tree. This not only prevents mold growth on the house but also prevents squirrels from jumping onto the roof and nesting in the soffits. Additionally, we can offer tree growth regulators (TGR) to control shoot growth and promote stronger root growth, ultimately keeping the tree smaller.

  • I have a large cavity in my tree and I notice it attracts squirrels what should I do?

It's recommended to have an arborist from Sepe Trees inspect the tree. Unfortunately, cavities are a progressive issue and there isn't much that can be done. Filling them with concrete has proven ineffective. The best option now is to fill them with insulating foam to keep squirrels out. However, this won't stop the cavity from getting worse or collecting water. You can also have the tree examined using a digital micro probe or seismograph to determine the amount of decay. If the tree has over 30% decay, it's recommended to have it removed.

  • My maple trees roots are growing on the surface of the lawn and it imposes a tripping hazard in my yard can I cut them?

We suggest that you have a certified arborist come and assess your tree. One possible recommendation is to use an air spade to invigorate the soil around the drip line of the tree. Afterward, mulch can be incorporated into this area to retain moisture. This will not only eliminate tripping hazards caused by exposed roots, but it will also provide a soft and comfortable spot in your yard for a picnic. As a result, the tree will have better ventilation and the nutrients in the soil will be more accessible.

  • I noticed that there is a lot of wholes on the leaves of my maple this spring what could it be?

It is highly probable that the culprit of the problem is the winter moth. Over the course of the last decade, we have endured numerous attacks from these inchworms. To prevent the tree from perishing, it is essential to apply a spray to it. Failure to do so will result in the tree producing a second set of leaves every year, consequently depleting its stored energy. This cycle will continue until the tree eventually loses the capacity to come out of dormancy.
